An accomplished radiologist and chair of the Department of Radiology at Hutrley Medical Center in Flint, and Memorial Health Care in Owosso, Michigan. Dr. AppaRao Mukkamala has also earned distinction as a philanthropist in his native India. In 2002, he led the creation of the NRI Medical college and Hospital. which educates 150 new physicians yearly and has treated more than 1.3 million patients to date. Two years later, Dr. AppaRao Mukkamala and his wife, a successful pediatrician, opened the Chinmaya Vijaya Orphanage for girls. Home to more than 100 girls, the orphanage provides not only a home, clothing, and nutritious food, but also a sponsored education through the college years.Known as “mommy” and “daddy” to the orphanage's children, the Mukkamalas have contributed more than $1 million in personal resources to its operations and to the mission of the medical school and teaching hospital. Dr. AppaRao Mukkamala spends 3 months of each year in India and the remaining months in Michigan, where he serves as clinical professor of radiology at Michigan State University in complement to his clinical practice. A leader among his peers, Dr. Mukkamala stands out as a member of the Hurley Medical Center's Board of Managers and Hurley Health Services' Board of Directors, and as a member of the American Medical Association's Council on Legislation.
